👉 Learn more about AIG 👈
AIG is celebrating its 100th anniversary and recognizing its history, diversity, and innovation for the future. The company has revenues in excess of 180 billion and is the most valuable insurance company worldwide. Shanghai was the birthplace of this thriving insurance industry. It began with an immigrant.
Cornelius Vander Starr visited New York City in 1921. There, he built an insurance pool that AAU served as the only agent.
The insurance pool was composed of a set of insurance carriers, each taking a certain percentage of the risk.
Starr was an immigrant and envisioned a new type of insurance company that would hire local talent to serve local clients.
Starr’s general agency, and life businesses, expanded to almost all of China’s major cities and also to the Philippines and Indonesia, Indonesia, and Malaysia for the rest of the 1920s. Headquarters were established in Havana (Cuba) in 1941.
From there, offices were opened in Venezuela, Colombia, and Puerto Rico as well as Argentina and Panama.
AIG commemorates Starr’s aunt Nelle Vander Starr who was an experienced office manager who came to China in 1923 to become the first woman to take a leadership position at Asia Life. This was the start of diversity in the workforce and women’s power.
AIG is a recognized Best Place to Work for LGBT Equality. Mogul’s Top 100 D&I Entrepreneurs List also included AIG. This is a prominent technology platform for women.
Brian Charles Duperreault, an American-born executive in the insurance sector, is currently based in Bermuda. AIG has had him as its CEO since May 2017.
Duperreault spent his entire career in the insurance business, starting as an AIG actuary in 1973. Duperreault hopes that everyone understands that not all of history is yet written. There are many more chapters and many more pioneers. They are not only pioneers; they also care for their neighbors.
In 2018, they contributed more than 62,000 volunteer hours to make a positive impact on their local communities. Blue Marble, a group of nine companies, is AIG’s proudest member.
They collaborate to offer socially beneficial, economically viable insurance to the poor. AIG also earned a 100 percent score on the Human Rights Campaign’s 2018 Corporate Equality Index.
AIG believes diversity is essential for its future and mission. It strives to create an environment that encourages creativity, innovation, growth, profitability, and social inclusion. AIG has been awarded the Mexican Center for Philanthropy “Socially Responsible Enterprise Award”. (CEMEFI).
